This same year Jerimaya joined the Windham Hill/Private Music label group at BMG Entertainment in Beverly Hills, CA as Director A&R. Here he was responsible for executive producing albums from Mark Isham, Tracy Scott Silverman, Lisa Lynne and some of the label’s lauded compilation series. In 2000, Jerimaya formed an independent A&R company and consulted for record companies and unsigned recording artists. In 2004, Jerimaya joined The Sanctuary Group’s Producer/Engineer Management division in Los Angeles, CA as a client manager, representing clients such as Dennis Herring, Ethan Johns, Joe Chiccarelli, Jacquire King, Nathaniel Kunkel. In 2005, Jerimaya co-founded Global Positioning Services Inc. with James Phelan representing some of the world’s top producers and engineers and recording artist management firm based in Santa Monica, CA. His credits include The Black Keys, Dr. John, Arctic Monkeys, Counting Crows, Ray LaMontagne, Grace Potter, Beck, Lydia Loveless, Chet Faker ….. and the list goes on!

Learn from the Master……yes the pun is intended!  As a mastering engineer who hears over 200 new songs a month and as many as 500 unique artists in a year, Brian Lucey is in a unique position to share valuable insights with us!  We look forward to asking him what he sees and hears consistently in songs that make the great ones stand out from the rest.  We songwriters want to know!

Opening Discussion:

  • Content of the song:  tone and texture vs. structure and content vs. artist and character vs. leadership and stardom.  The Cocktail.
  • Songwriting principles:  Objective Truths, style not the issue.
  • Ability to connect with the audience:  the Message is partly the Messenger.
  • Ways to separate great songs from the average ones as a songwriter:  Sufficiency and Necessity, working from Silence.
  • What to do once you think you have a great song:  Recording and Production strategy
  • Advice for songwriters from Brian:  How to Get what you want by Giving what they Need.

Q&A with Brian Lucey, open to any and all topics.

Brian Lucey’s Background

Brian was a professional guitarist and singer at 18 in NYC, then a student of Robert Fripp and Guitar Craft in his 20s.  He later became a tracking engineer, mixing engineer and eventually rock producer, working mostly with MM1200 2″  tape, and eventually found his home as a mastering engineer.  Originally from the great music city of Columbus, Ohio he works out of Los Angeles and is now a Mastering Engineer doing every style, and best known for multiple certified Platinum sellers, Grammy winners and Aria (AUS) winners.

Best known for The Black Keys “Brothers”, “El Camino”, “Turn Blue” as well as Arctic Monkeys “AM”, Dr John “Locked Down” and Marilyn Manson “The Pale Emperor.” Brian masters nearly 2000 songs a year in every style. His unique sense of musicality and emphasis on intimacy and service to music, connects each artist with their core audience and expands their appeal to the widest possible audience.

Cyber Space

Yeah, we know, you’re a songwriter. So when did songwriting success suddenly involve a Master’s Degree in computer science? If you’re reading this, you probably just about got this email thing down and before you know it you’ve got Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Soundcloud, Reverb Nation, SonicBids and lord knows what other billion dollar online dorm room creations to deal with.

But you just want to know how to get yourself out there and be competitive with today’s other modern songwriters without having to read a dozen different instruction manuals, right? That’s where your humble SDSG President comes in.

Tim Mudd just happens to be a walking encyclopedia (remember those?) of online music tools. As part of SDSG’s continued dedication to being the ultimate offline songwriting resource in San Diego County, our fall kick-off event will be an open “Town Hall-style” workshop to answer your online music tool questions.

So fire up that flux-capacitor, rev up to 88mph, bring your laptop or Internet enabled device and join us at Country Inn & Suites on September 16th between 7 and 9 p.m. (sign-up at 6 p.m.) where Tim will be available to answer every burning question as well as offering his insight to useful online resources where you can shed those electro-water wings and continue teaching yourself at your own pace.

  •  Admission is $10 for members,
  •  $15 for two if you bring a non-member guest.
  •  Admission non-members $15

One Sheet SDSG-Presents-Michael-Laskow

A Message From Diane Waters

I met Michael Laskow in 1992 just before he founded Taxi and he’s as enthusiastic about discovering and promoting songwriters today as he was back then.  When we spoke recently he was relating the whirlwind of activity he’s involved in to get ready for this year’s Taxi “Road Rally.” Each year he ups the ante and this time out he’s secured multi Grammy award winning songwriter Diane Warren as the keynote interview.  Even with all of this, Michael is happily making time for the San Diego Songwriter’s Guild this month! He’ll spend the evening with us, share some of his vast knowledge and even listen to some members songs via Skype. What a great opportunity for us!

Pat PattisonSDSG July 2012 Event with Berklee’s Pat Pattison Intensive Writing Weekend for Songwriters 10AM-4PM Saturday/Sunday, July 7 and 8 at the Country Inn Suites.

In connection with SDSG, world renowned songwriting teacher and author Pat Pattison will present a 2-day Songwriting Seminar in San Diego.  In this seminar, songwriters will explore in depth the challenges presented in Pattison’s new book, Songwriting Without Boundaries: Lyric Writing Exercises for Finding Your Voice.

Pattison’s ground-breaking work on metaphor opens a portal to seeing the world not only for what it is, but for what it could be. Writers learn to integrate Object Writing into their Songwriting; create powerful and effective metaphor, using straight-forward exercises to extend and reverse metaphor, and finally, work with rhythm and rhyme, preparing your writing for its journey into song.

Fresh back from touring Australia, appearing as Keynote speaker at the WAMi Conference in Perth June 1, and featured speaker at APRA’s SongSummit May 26-28, Pattison is looking forward to working with songwriters in California as they hone their craft. Participants in the seminar will have an opportunity to receive constructive critiques of their songs and lyrics.
